Home At Last

It took me nearly an hour to get home after I left Hatch in the parking lot. I may have felt fine while I was lying down, but sitting up was close enough to standing that it nearly was a moot point. I ended up pulling into a parking lot four blocks away, to just lie down and convince my stomach that my car didn't need to be redecorated. It was a long fifteen minutes before I thought I would be able to sit up again. That lasted nearly to Harvey's home. Before I again had to pull over and lay back down. Talk about frustrating!
By the end of my journey, I really wished that Hatch had offered to drive me home. Because what I'd just gone through. Torture. Pure and simple. Having him carry me into the house and up two flights of stairs also would have been alright with me by that point.
Because seriously, I felt like a new born colt at the end of a marathon by the time I collapsed onto my bed. Exhausted. Tired. And yah, definitely sick.

A Parting

I moaned as the bright sunlight struck my eyes, sending an instant bolt of lightning to my head. I buried my head against Hatch's arm. "I'm going to die." I complained softly.
My stomach did flip flops as we stepped off the curb, to get to my car. Why had I ever let this guy convince me to leave the sanctuary of the birds?
"You'll be fine." he said confidently, shifting his grip to wrap one arm around my shoulders. "I'll catch you if your knees buckle."
Of course, now that he said it all my knees wanted to do was just that. "You're not helping."
"And here I thought I was."
I groaned. "Not what I meant...are we..."
"Nearly there."
I heard the familiar honk of my car. Hatch must have unlocked it remotely. But that didn't tell me how close we were...
"Here." He said, in his normal voice. I opened my eyes, squinting in the light to see my car door open and waiting for me. Finally. Relief. Sanctuary. I climbed in, okay it was more like I fell in to the drivers seat. Dumb knees collapsing on me. I didn't make an effort to sit up right away though. I just needed a breather.
"Thanks." I finally managed, pushing myself up to sit, oh so not confidently at all, behind the wheel. Could I even make the drive home? Like this? It had to be at least 15 minutes away. At least.
"No problem." Hatch said reaching out to push some stray hair out of my face. "I'm sure you can take it from here."
He said it so confidently that I nearly believed him.
"At least I'll be sitting down.' I managed.
He grinned. "That's half the battle there."
My hands tightened on the steering wheel. Why wasn't he offering to drive me home? I would have refused, but after all he'd done.
"You need to turn your car on." he reminded me.
"I know. I know. I preparing myself!" Had my stomach settled enough to actually manage this?
One way to find out. I looked at him, forcing myself to smile. I probably looked like a demented zombie. "Thanks again, for everything Hatch."
"It was my pleasure." he replied placing a hand on the door to shut it.
I stuck my arm out, preventing him.
"I'll see you around?" I asked, hoping I sounded nonchalant enough.
He hesitated, but finally nodded. "I'll be around. Just get better alright?"
"I'll hold you to that. I owe you. Big time."
"You don't"
"I owe you." I cut him off as I turned the car on.
He nodded, closing the door.

He stood in the parking lot as I drove away, visible until I turned the corner.
My hands tightened on the steering wheel. I hoped he'd be around. I had a lot of questions for Prince Charming, and I couldn't very well get answers from him if he disappeared back into my dreams.

It was a good thing I ducked down, for Isabelle rushed into the kitchen like a whirlwind, clanging metal against metal, smacking wood, and ended up creating a lot of interesting smells. It was all I could do to keep still and out of sight. My belly felt like it was pressed against my spine, and the smells. I wanted them. I wanted something in me, to stuff my cheeks full of food, to finally have the energy to do more then rest on the heat.
Yet, I knew Isabelle, the source of high screams, and sometimes the scent of Fanged Death around her, wouldn't feed me. And that knowledge kept me back. She was no Maille.
I heard how she talked to the other creatures while I rested in Maille's pocket.
No, I would wait, and hope that Maille would stir from her nest soon before the scents surrounding me, drove me to do something that I would regret.

~Fishy Thief. Hello. Anyone there? Fishy Thief.~

Vaguely I felt something run down my spine. I flicked an ear, curling up tighter. ~Mhhmmm~

Despite my best intentions, I did end up sleeping.
I could totally picture Lisa smirking as I finally curled up in the plastic hut. Which is why I waited until the store had closed and she had left before I did so.

I'd actually forgotten what it was like to sleep. A fish never falls totally asleep, some part of me had always been active. But the hamster form? I fell asleep so quickly and deeply, that I didn't stir. I didn't hear the first of the workers come in. I didn't hear customers come in! Which had to say something, because that bell over the door. Noisy as a fire alarm on steroids.
Me. I heard nothing.

Apparently, I needed to catch up on a lot of 'lost deep sleep' that I hadn't had as a fish.

So It Begins

"My other self tells me, that you're part of the pack. Is this true?"

He blinked. "We're friends." he replied, slowly. "I don't know if that means we're a pack."

"Let's find out." I said once more grabbing his burnt arm, making sure my grip tightened before he could jerk it away. Now, now he couldn't move.

"What. are. You. doing!" he punctuated each word with a harder jerk of his arm.

"A test." I said. "It's easy. You just need to look into my eyes."

He snorted. "Look into your eyes?"

"Yes."

"What's that supposed to show?"

I barred my teeth, and he flinched. "Just. Look."

His fists clenched. But he squarely met my eyes. "Do you know how creepy it is to stare into gold eyes? It's creepy."

"Don't talk."

He barred his teeth, mimicking my own facial expression, but the human kept quiet.

At least he has some sense.
If only he had more of it. How long are you going to have him stare at us?
Until you get him to hear you.
Him hear me? You're the one in control...wait. You mean mind speak to him?
Yes. Get him to hear you. I won't interfere. If he can mind speak, you'll be able to communicate.
If not, this just turns into a really awkward staring contest. He mentally took a deep breath. Okay goes nothing

Well, That's A Surprise

My other half stiffened in my mind Since when could you do this!

Easily I fended off his attempt to take back control. What wasn't as easy was balancing on the two legs. How he managed to do this, I wasn't sure. But I managed to get my equilibrium.
I have complete control for two more days, remember.

I didn't think that meant you would become me!

It didn't. I'd always been able to do this. But when I usually only had three days of complete control, I preferred my form to the human one.
Remain calm. I reassured him. I'm not out to take over your life.

Oh, that's assuring. What in the crazy are you doing in my form if you don't like being in my form?!

I rolled my eyes. Like I said. No way to find out if he mind speaks unless we test it.

And why couldn't you do that as a wolf!

Last I checked, I couldn't speak English.

Riight.
I could sense his frustration.

He's going to freak out when he realizes that I'm not me.

You're not talking to him. Unless you want to give me another two days?

He weighed that option for a good half minute. Just don't kill him okay?

I rolled my eyes. Since when would I kill one of your pack?

Since when do you take my form? He countered.

I didn't think the two compared, actually.
Perhaps you should remain concerned that I'll scare him off. I responded. After all, my record of killing humans still remained at zero.

The crunch of leaves alerted us at the same time. Well, I guess we'll see. He's coming now.

I raised my head in time to see the human moving through the trees,
Jake
I didn't care what his name was.

He stopped upon seeing me. His shoulders went back. If he'd been a wolf, he'd be putting his ears back.
"H-hey Danny." He said.
Yes, he definitely was aware that he shouldn't be out here.

"You've gone the wrong way." I coolly, replied.
Do you know how weird it is to have you talk in my voice?
Probably as weird as me speaking. Wolf communication is much simpler.

He flinched. "Yah, I figured that out three hours ago." He looked at me, a challenge in his eyes. "It wasn't on purpose. Everything looks the same."

He didn't know how to look then, the forest was widely varied compared to the caves networks the humans chose to live in.

"You need to learn how to look then, human."

"Human?" he scoffed before his shoulders stiffened. "Wait," he took a step back. "You're not Danny?"

He could catch on quick enough. I raised an eyebrow. "No."

"You're...uh, well, are there two of you?"

I bared my teeth. "You do catch on quick."

He flinched, but didn't back away. "Then who are you?"

"The wolf."

"You don't have a name?"

"I don't need one."

"Ah...kay." he shook his head. "Why are you here then? Shouldn't you be...hunting?" he paled on that last word. "Where's Danny?" he added, obviously trying to change the subject from the thought that I might be hunting him.

"He's here." I started forward to close the distance. "He won't be back for a couple of days." I grabbed onto his burnt arm.
My other self was right, the human twisted out of my grip, before I could tighten it. But not before I felt the toned muscles beneath the scarred exterior. "The fake injury." I said, softly. "My other self, was impressed that you climbed out of that cave with the bite I gave you."

"You gave me? No Danny,"
"Stopped me from tearing out your throat. Hence why he's not here right now. He interrupted my hunt. How did you climb out of that cave? I bit you nearly to the bone, tore flesh."

He lifted his head. "I thought that would be obvious. Do you know what Danny and I do at school?"

I did, but I didn't care.
We have a rock climbing class. Since he pretends his arm is useless there, he works on climbing the wall one handed. He never made it very far up, but....
But that could have been another ploy. I finished for him. At least you picked an interesting human to make part of your pack.

Thanks?

I nodded. "Those years of practice on the wall actually helped you out."

He shrugged. "Who'da thought." His fists tightened as again he met my eyes. If he'd been a wolf, that would have been a challenge, but I knew better with these humans. Still, I could picture his tail lashing if he had had one. "Why are you here, talking to me?"

When The Unexpected Happens

Wait. Hold up. Mind speak?

I certainly wasn't going to stop.
What we're doing now, I replied. Honestly what did you think this was?

Well, duh. But I didn't think we could do it with anyone else.

You can't.

But you just said Jake could.

I snorted, circling around to get in front of the wayward human. He has potential. That doesn't mean all humans have potential.

Why do you think Jake has potential? He's not a...

No. I said shortly. Easy prey forbid that this human with the fake arm became like us. The half breeds never adjusted well to this sort of life style.

That's a relief, he wouldn't last long out here, but seriously, how is it possible we could talk to him?

Potentially. I corrected. There are some bonds between packs that are strong enough to be understood silently.

That's packs.

Did you not tell me, this human was part of your human pack?

Ye-es.

If your bond with him is strong enough, then he may be able to mind speak with you. It happens on occasion to those like us. Our sort, if we decide to trust the humans, can learn to mind speak with those who, as you would word it: 'get you.'

Then how come we haven't encountered this before? I mean, we can't mind speak with my parents.

Do they get you?

Well...no.

There's your answer. I replied turning to wait for the human to catch up. If this burnt one could do so, now was as good a time as any other to test it out.

Test it out? How? He'll probably run from us at first sight.

Will he? I asked as I shoved my forepaws off the ground and allowed the fur to melt away from our body, replaced with the human skin. I'd yet to see a human run from another human after all. Especially one that was known to them.

Unsneakily Sneaking Out

Ooohkay. It probably wasn't one of my brightest ideas to go sneak out after Steel.
I mean, who is Steel's enemy?
Surge.
Who put a collar around my neck.
Surge.
Who can control said collar?
Surge.
Did I think about that? Nope. All I thought was "Oh hey! I see Steel sneaking out of the tower, I'll follow him!"
Remind me to do it again when I have more control over my powers okay? Okay. I mean, I totally hero worship Steel. Seriously, dude loses his powers and he's sneaking out of the tower to go fight Surge anyway? Ah man! It's like he's become the Batman of the city. Only without that cool utility belt.
But, if I go off randomly shooting my powers into the sky by accident, it's totally icing hard to pretend you weren't where you weren't supposed to be when the powers you have, none of the other supers have.

Did I mention that? None of the other heroes have laser powers?
Yah...well they don't.
I'll explain more next post. Those powers. I really should write that up,

in any icing case.

I followed Steel. Nearly fell off the tower and nearly broke a few bones, but I managed to catch myself.
Again, I need to practice my powers. It doesn't help to try and climb down the floors using my heated hands to make holes in the side if they suddenly stop working does it? It really doesn't. Note to icing self. Try and escape out a window that's a little closer to the ground.
-Oh and don't worry, the holes aren't there anymore. I can't have Surge sneaking up my escape path now can I? Yikes!

Where did I follow Steel to?
No idea, sneaky fellow. I ended up losing him about two blocks away. I suppose it's a benefit that he probably has a car stashed somewhere nearby he can just slip into traffic with.

No, he found me a couple of hours later. Because, well, as I mentioned before. My powers went off.

"Issac," he grabbed me by the shoulder from behind. "What are you doing out here? How did you get out of the tower?"
Do you know how hard it is to not look guilty when your idol catches you where you aren't supposed to be?
"Uhhh." Was my brilliant reply.
I certainly wasn't purposely sending a laser show up into the sky. The mosquitoes attacked me, I responded. And my powers responded to my response. Hello little light show. Again. Oops.
"I needed some fresh air." Came my feeble response once my brain kicked into gear.
Well, what can I say, I didn't really expect Steel to find me while I was trying to find him. I wasn't about to tell him I was trying to follow him either. Something tells me he wouldn't take well to me thinking he needed some, well, powered back up while he has the bracelet around his wrist.
"And the top of the tower doesn't work because?"
"Devoto is there with his buddies all the time. I didn't fancy getting wet."
"Yet you're hanging around a fountain park?"
-cool park, has fountains everywhere, the unaware person easily gets wet amongst all the different water shows that can suddenly appear anywhere within the place. It's actually really cool. And new too. There used to be a school there until Surge destroyed it in one of his many battles with Steel. And yes, totally not the place I should be when I just told Steel I didn't want to get wet. Oops.

"I uh..well..." I actually looked at him. "Hey! You're injured." His shoulder was all torn and bleeding, plus he had a gash over his eyes. "You've been fighting Surge!"
He smiled. "Or I could have been robbed, but yes. It was Surge."
"Did you win? Are you okay? Where did it go down, why are you here! You need to see."
"Calm down, Issac." he cut me off. "I'm fine. It's a minor injury."
"It doesn't look minor."
"It's minor, but if we stick around here Surge will find the both of us, and I'd rather not go into another battle with him right now."
I gulped. "So he got away?" I did not want to run into him in the semi darkness.
"Doesn't he always?" came a rather tired response. "But his plot with some razor pages has been foiled."
"Razor pages?"
He lightly shoved me to get us walking back towards the tower. "He was planning to make a cyclone of death from flying books at the downtown Library.
"And you got injured....from paper cuts?" Now that we were walking under street lights I could see a ton of little cuts all over his arms and face.
"So did he."
"And it doesn't phase either one of you." I muttered. "Did you throw him into the middle of it at least? Give him a taste of his own medicine?"
Steel laughed. "If I had my powers I probably could have, but no, he got injured when his machine exploded after I stalled it."
"Stalled it, with what?"
"A ruler."

Going Going Gone

Devoto probably hadn't meant that I should sneak out of the tower when he said I shouldn't just sit there.
But seeing that board with holes in it, has given me an idea.
I mean, once Steel found out how we'd managed to sneak out, he'd had my exit blocked, but I wouldn't have let that stop me for long. Surge, or no Surge.
Okay, that last part isn't totally true, I mean, I let it stop me for the last little bit, but hey. Life is about taking chances.
...And noticing that Steel has left the tower too only spurred that idea.

A Pep Talk?

"Well you've been moping around....like a lot."
"Shut up Devoto"
"Nah, that's no fun." He plopped down next to me. "What's up, man? You finally get your powers and you've been acting like a mouse caught in a trap."
"An app description since I am in a trap." I replied, tugging at my collar for emphasis.
"So what?"
"So what what?" I snapped back. I know, a great response.
"You're acting like you've given up, Sac. You've let Surge win."
"I don't see how he hasn't! Look at me, the city, Steel!"
"Steel isn't sitting on a staircase feeling sorry for himself."
"Because he's Steel!"
"And you're, what, incapable of being awesome like he is?"
"Yes!"
He snorted. "Says the guy who knows more about Surge then everyone."
"But Steel."
"Maybe you know even more than Steel."
"Doubted, he's fought him longer."
"You managed to beat his crazy tower maze."
"By cutting through it. I cheated"
"Oh come on, Issac! If I had your powers I would have done the same thing! What is the point of having abilities if you don't use them? We'd still be stuck in that tower if it weren't for you. I knew you'd get us out."
Knew he'd get us...wait. That reminded me. One thing that been bugging me. I turned to Devoto. "How did you know my powers?" I demanded.
He blinked. I don't think that was the response he expected. "What do you mean?"
"When I fired at you, in the tower, you weren't surprised at it. You called me by name. How did you know I shot at you with the laser things? Why didn't you assume it was a device of Surges?"
Devoto shook his head with a smile. "I've known since I had to rescue you from the diving board, Sac."
That was about the same time he started working harder to get me to show my powers. "How?" I challenged.
He shrugged off his backpack and pulled out a piece of diving board. "Since I saw this." He handed it to me. I frowned, taking it from him. It looked like any other, wait.
"What's with the holes?" I asked. There were 10 of them, unevenly spaced and shaped along its edge.
"You left them there." Devoto replied. "This is the board you were hanging onto for dear life to when you thought I was trying to kill you with ice. Didn't you ever wonder how you managed to hang on?"
I had, but everything else had pushed it from my mind. Silently I placed my hands on the board, yes, the holes fit my fingers exactly. "Why didn't you tell me before now?" All this time. He'd known my powers all this time?
"Because you're stubborn, Sac. And I'm sure you wouldn't have believed me."
True. I wouldn't have.
"You hung on, when anyone else would have dropped. That's the sort of person you are Sac. Stubborn." He clapped my shoulder as he stood. "Give yourself some slack. Stop living in fear of what Surge might do. You'll just end up sitting there."

Still Here, but Panicking

So, you've probably noticed I haven't been posting recently.
I admit it, I've been avoiding blogging.
Mostly, because I'm not sure what to say.

I mean. The city is three threads away from snapping into pure chaos.
Last I'd posted, Surge hadn't done anything.
But Ice, the dude certainly came out of the woodwork these past weeks.
Snow, Flames, Wood exploding, demon cows. He's gone crazy like a whirlwind!
It's all Steel can do to send heroes out fast enough to stop him!
Though, I'm not quite sure it's Surge. They're catching tons of bad guys.
But Surge is never present. It's like those guys are in the wrong spot at the wrong time.

What is he up to?

I can't stop thinking that his next plan involves me.
It's terrifying. The stress has gotten to me.
I mean, ice, he can control me! And there was no visible remote when he did it.

I don't know where to go. What to do.
Use my powers, not use my powers? Stay in the tower, leave the tower.

What if he's going to use me to hurt Steel? What if he's going to use me to hurt the city?
It's like I'm not safe anywhere.

What's the point of even getting powers if I feel like I'm checkmated everywhere I look?
